I feel extremely lucky to lead a terrific company that makes a real difference in people’s lives. I utilize a combination of general management, marketing, business development, corporate development and legal experience, as well as good, old fashioned common sense to lead Spark Networks. I’ve been at Spark since October 2004, when I started as the company’s General Counsel. I became Chief Operating Officer in 2005 and President in 2006, before being appointed Chief Executive Officer and a Director of the company in 2011. Prior to Spark, I worked at a variety of different companies, including telecommunications provider, Global Crossing, Internet infrastructure providers GlobalCenter and Exodus Communications, and biotechnology company, CytRx Corporation. I started my career as an attorney in the Corporate & Securities Group in the San Francisco headquarters of international law firm Orrick, Herrington and Sutcliffe LLP.
In My Own Words
For as long as I can remember, I’ve had an entrepreneurial streak. My first business venture was as a teenager – a baseball card business funded by two investors. Lucky for me, those investors (my parents) were willing to let the CEO learn on the job. As a big sports fan, one analogy I often used to describe myself was that of a utility player on a baseball team – on any day, I’d fill in wherever necessary to help lead my team to a victory. Identifying problems is the easy part. Finding solutions is where I like to focus because that’s where the challenge lies and challenges inspire me. Now, as general manager of this team, I work hard to surround myself with dedicated team members who complement each other to create true synergy, where the whole of the company is greater than the sum of its parts.
My Ideal Match
It’s important to me to lead a life of integrity, both personally and professionally. I believe that a meaningful life is one where you see the big picture and keep what you most value at the top of your list. For me, that’s my wife and family – those people I can really count on, through thick and thin. And, that family-like atmosphere is one of the things that makes Spark so special. To draw one more sports analogy, although our team has its share lot of superstars, our team chemistry is what defines us and sets us apart.
